Life is pretty amazing and that goes with wines. Yah? I know you would agree with me but my life is most celebrated with wines along the side. And with that said, what more amazing is that having a wine tasting session with the wine-makers wherein you get to know how it is done and what’s the best in a place who knows everything about wine, Planet Grapes!
Cheers! |
To give you an information, Planet Grapes is a modern wine retail store & restaurant-cum-bar that serves as a hip gathering place for budding & seasoned wine enthusiasts who want to discover “wine without the drama.” And for the St. Urbans-Hof Riesling Wines tasting event, Planet Grapes, Shangri-la Mall (North wing) welcomed Mr. Nik Weis. He is the owner & winemaker of Germany’s renowned St. Urbans-Hof Weingut.

Nik Weis presented the St. Urbans Hof Riesling wines that are of outstanding quality and value, and led the tasting, which proved to be an exciting and tasty endeavor. The event demonstrated how versatile the Mosel Riesling wines can be with food, including the delicious entrées, Pinoy comfort foods and desserts expertly whipped up by Planet Grapes executive chef. Such menu offerings and other specialties can be relished at Planet Grapes.
my favorite - Urban Bockstein Kabinett 2013 |
The top-quality Mosel Riesling wines are noted for their food pairing versatility and refreshing palate appeal. During the special event, guests savored not just the wines but also the delicious food pairings. Planet Grapes offers an interesting menu for wine lovers of all ages. It is where “street food meets wine.” Whereas, I couldn’t imagined that it could be possible. Well, it tastes good and perfect! What I loved the most about the wine tasting event, the wines were arranged from mild to something that has still sweetness and yet has the wonderful refreshing taste. Hmmm… on which it seems that they saved the best for last. My personal favorite was the Urban Bockstein Kabinett 2013. It has an elderflower and lily on the nose, white fruits flavor and succulent acidity, and silky textures. It is way perfect for young professionals who wanted to chill and relax after having a busy hours in the office.
Moreover, wine has been central to the Weis Family for generations. The Weis clan’s deep respect for the traditions of the Mosel region of Germany has always been the guiding principle in the production of the St. Urbans-Hof wines. It is in Germany’s Rhein and Mosel River Valleys that the white grape gained its firm hold in the contemporary white wine market.
with Mr. Nik Weis |
Management of the wine estate was passed on from St. Urbans-Hof winery founder Nicolaus Weis (who named the estate), to his son Hermann in the 1960s, who grew the nursery into one of the largest in Germany and who worked to establish himself as a globally recognized vine breeder with a specialty on Riesling. In 1997, Hermann and Ida’s son, Nik(olaus), joined his father in running the winery. As third- generation winemaker, Nik Weis became involved in all aspects of running St. Urbans-Hof – from vine breeding, to cultivating vineyards and making wine. He tucked a degree in viticulture and enology at Geisenheim, one of the world’s leading schools for winemakers in Germany.
The St. Urbans Hof Riesling wines presented during the special occasion perfectly capture the individual terroirs of the estate's vineyards. Only the ripest and noblest grapes are hand selected to produce St. Urbans-Hof Riesling wines. Mosel is one of the most northerly grape-growing regions in the world. Though the cool climate and minimal sunlight make it harder for the vines to produce grapes, such conditions -- when paired with experienced tending -- produce some of the world’s finest Riesling grapes.
Indeed, the St. Urbans Hof Riesling wines, exclusively carried by Planet Grapes, pair well with the restaurant-bar’s food offerings that have an innovative intergalactic spin. Planet Grapes is truly proud to bring the St. Urban-Hof’s fine wines to the local wine-drinking scene. Planet Grapes aims to nurture the next generation of wine lovers in the Philippines. The restaurant-bar has a fun, cozy and wine-friendly ambiance.
Planet Grapes first opened at Tuscany at Mckinley Hill, Upper Mckinley Rd., Mckinley Hill, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City. Other stores are located at Ayala Center Cebu, Cebu City; and now at the recently opened branches in Shangri-La Plaza Mall North Wing, EDSA, Mandaluyong City; and at the River Park, Festival Supermall, Alabang, Muntinlupa City.
